I’ve always been in awe of what car manufacturers think of year after year. A couple days ago, I was watching a commercial from BMW and came across an astonishing car that I believe can change automobiles forever. Imagine a car that resembles a human. A car that has “skin” and eyelids. Well, that is the BMW GINA.

The BMW GINA Light Visionary Model that was being installed in the BMW Museum in Munich has finally been revealed, and the futuristic design study shows how BMW designers are thinking outside of the box when it comes to the materials that make up a car and also how the car relates to the driver. GINA stands for “Geometry and Functions in ‘N’ Adaptations”, which basically means that designers from both BMW and BMW Group DesignworksUSA were allowed to throw out the rulebook. This is most evident in the GINA Light Visionary Model’s outer skin, which is made entirely out of textile fabric that’s pulled taut around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wires. The skeleton of the car is controlled by electro-hydraulic devices and can actually move and change shape beneath the fabric skin. For instance, the headlights of the concept can be exposed or hidden by the car’s skin just like blinking eyes, and the hood opens from the center as the fabric parts to expose the engine.

This idea extends to the interior, where BMW designers have made visible only those instruments that are required at a certain time, while the rest of the time the same fabric interior “blinks” them out of view. The car itself looks somewhat like a Z4 Roadster, though after viewing the extensive gallery of high-res images below, you’ll be amazed how much the outer skin looks like normal sheetmetal. Until, that is, you see how the doors open. They lift up in a semi-scissor fashion and since there are no exposed hinges, the fabric artfully binds up as the door swings open. While the design of the GINA Light Visionary Model is very Bangle-esque with concave and convex surfaces intermingling everywhere you look, it looks appropriate and natural here. The car is very much a concept, meant more to inspire BMW’s own designers and engineers rather than excite the public, but now we’re excited about shape-changin, fabric-covered cars, anyway.

But the GINA hasn’t only been designed to turn heads. Expect its looks to influence the next-generation Z4. GINA represents more than just a concept car. In the future, we may just be choosing cars with our similar personalities and appearances. What a world that will be!

Make sure you check out the video below to see how it works!

(aux) says: BMW GINA is seriously dressed to impress.

On Christmas Day 2009, Amazon customers bought more Kindle E-Books than regular books. The company also claims the Kindle is the most gifted item in Amazon’s history. These two facts were part of the online retailer’s recently announced holiday sales activity. This comes as a surprise for me considering the enormous hype surrounding the upcoming Apple Tablet. Considering the restrictions of the Amazon Kindle, I figured that most smart consumers would hold off on the Kindle until January when Apple announces its own Tablet that is predicted to be revolutionary E-Book reader mixed with a tablet computer device.
// ]]>

The entire draw of the Apple iPad is that it can be a media device — not a medium device. When the Apple Tablet debuts it will have multimedia capabilities. It will play movies and music, have eReader capability, internet, photo browsing, etc.. Don’t fool yourself into believing that it will simply be a“subject a” device. It will do more and it will cost more than any of those dedicated devices.

The Amazon Kindle, on the other hand, can just read E-Books. According to the Economist, over 90% of existing e-readers use a display technology called E Ink, made by a firm of the same name that was spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997. E Ink is based upon tiny capsules filled with positively charged white particles and negatively charged black ones, suspended in a clear liquid. Transparent electrodes above and below the layer of microcapsules create electric fields that, depending on their polarity, push either the black or the white particles to the surface in a particular region of the display. It is easy on the eye, does not need to be back-lit, can be read easily in bright sunlight, and requires very little battery power. (The image on the display remains in place, even when no power is applied, and energy is only expended when changing it.) There is clearly room for improvement, however. E Ink displays are relatively slow to update, which can irritate readers as they turn their digital pages. They cannot display color images or video, unlike the liquid-crystal display (LCD) technology used in mobile phones and laptops.

With such limitations, I wonder why the Kindle is still selling in large numbers. I admit that the Kindle is a revolutionary device in its own right. When it premiered in 2007, it was surely revolutionary. The “book in your pocket” technology was amazing. However, three years later, it now seems to be aging technology that needs reform.

That’s where the Apple Tablet comes into play. It won’t be the 10-inch touch-screen display that drives adoption of Apple’s rumored tablet computer, but rather the availability of apps for the device, according to one industry analyst.

Gene Munster, senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray, said in a research note to clients on Monday that initial tablet successes will come from the confidence consumers have with Apple’s mobile platform. It is widely expected that Apple will use an iPhone-like operating system on the tablet, enabling consumers to utilize existing apps.

Recent media reports that Apple is asking developers for super-sized versions of their apps is helping to fuel speculation that existing apps will work on the tablet.

An interesting tidbit of information in Munster’s research note is that he expects Apple’s tablet to compete well in the netbook category. While the Netbook focuses on its portability, Munster sees the tablet focusing “more on apps, entertainment content (from the iTunes Store), and Web surfing.” So, combining all the rumors, the Apple Tablet will be an iPhone-like technology mixed with a Kindle and a netbook capable of not only reading E-Books but also storing Apps, Music and Movies. So, if I were you, I’d hold off on your Kindle purchase and wait for the future of E-Book readers, the Apple Tablet.

(aux) says: If the Apple Tablet lives up to its hype, it will surely be an Amazon Kindle. Wait for it.

Ever been on on a business trip or vacation and suddenly ran out of battery for your phone in the middle of nowhere?

TurboCharge Cell Phone Charger gives you up to two hours of talk time, or a full charge–anytime, anywhere. The latest model is new and improved; with a durable plastic case, built-in LED flashlight, on-off switch, battery meter, improved charging power and digital overcharge protection. The Phone Kit comes with 13 adapters to fit most recent cellphone models. Uses two AA batteries (included).

TurboCharge Phone Kit

After some careful research I found that this is one of the few, if not only battery chargers that actually charge the ipod instead of helping to just maintain the charge.

I highly recommend the TurboCharge Phone and iPod Kits.

Creating a website seems like a complicated process. Many people think you have to be a star web designer or know how to code. Well, you don’t. You don’t need to be a techie or learn any complicated HTML or CSS code to make a fully functional website. In this article, I will explain how to make websites for absolutely no cost. I will then provide useful resources to make even more complicated websites like this one.

It is a common saying that nothing in this world is free. While this may be true for many things in the world, websites are not one of them. Nowadays, there are a plethora of useful resources that allow any entrepreneur or person to make a website for free.

Google Sites

Google Sites is a free and easy way to create and share web pages. It is powerful enough for a company intranet, yet simple enough for a family website. Google Sites allows you to start a website from scratch or use one of their attractive templates. It is the best thing to hit the web since Google Apps.

For a long time I’d been wanting a way to have a more private area, where others could still contribute without having to give them full administrative privileges to my domain – and Sites fits the bill and then some. I’ve used it to support many varied activities including private notes and conversations with clients, keeping track of my assignments and homework, letting my friends and colleagues create their own web pages, collaborating with others on content for books and engineering designs, and even sharing pictures of our new dog with my friends. It’s easier and faster than a wiki, I can control who can see or contribute to a given site, and it’s just downright fun to use! It also allows you to easier integrate Google Adsense and Google Analytics, two of the most important tools for any web manager.

Sample Google Site

WordPress.com

WordPress is another free resource that allows you to build a website using the hundreds of free themes online. WordPress offers two packages: wordpress.com (the free one) and wordpress.org (the platform that I use for this website that requires a domain and some additional work). In order to build a website at absolutely no cost, WordPress.com is a great resource. You can get a website started in less time than it takes you to read this sentence. All you need is an email address. You’ll get your own WordPress.com address (like you.wordpress.com),a selection of great free and customizable designs for your website (called themes), 3 gigabytes of file storage (that’s about 2,500 pictures!) and all the other great features listed here. You can add as much as you want for free, your blog can be public to the world or private for just your friends, and its premium features are completely optional.

It’s just not for blogs! WordPress.com has a feature called “pages” which allows you to easily create web pages. For example, you could add an “about me” page with your biography, and a link to that page would be automatically added to your sidebar. You can even create an entire web site using pages on WordPress.com, with a custom home page and your blog as one of the sub-pages.

Wordpress.com Sample

Webs

Webs, like Google Sites and WordPress.com, allows you to create a fully functional website for absolutely free.

Not only does Webs offer more than 300 professional templates for businesses and personal websites, it also allows you to sell your products and services via integrated web stores. You can upload multiple images, set your prices, and collect payment via PayPal and/or Google Checkout (you can also do this with WordPress.com, but this requires a little more knowledge of HTML coding). Moreover, Webs allows you to create conversations with a blog or forum, allowing you and your customers to post your thoughts and share your experiences. One of the coolest features is the mailing list feature. Webs allows you to keep your customers up-to-date on the latest and greatest products, services and sales via e-newsletters. Like Google Sites and WordPress, Webs comes with the ability to track the number of visitors that come to your site. This shows you what interests customers and will help you better manage your site and business.

Webs Sample

Which is the Best?

Google Sites, WordPress and Webs are all great tools to create websites.

In my opinion, though, due to its expandability with widgets and large usage basis, WordPress is one of the best alternatives to creating a website. One thing I love about WordPress is that with a little time, you can make your website look 100% professional. Any website created on Google Sites will always stand out as being a Google Site; whereas a WordPress.com website can be masked to look unique. I personally use WordPress for this website. While it is the WordPress.org version of WordPress that allows private domains and even more features, I love the ease of use and performance of WordPress.

So overall Google Sites, WordPress and Webs are all ways to make a website for free in order to expand your business or just have fun on the web!

On paper, the Droid is more than impressive. It boasts a fast processor, a large display with almost double the resolution of the iPhone, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It packs a 5 megapixel camera with flash and zoom, and a GPS into a slick, attractive package that is certainly comparable to the iPhone in terms of aesthetics.

Droid is built on Google’s open source Android mobile operating system. Droid is also the first device that will be available with the newest version–Android 2.0 (also referred to as ‘Eclair’). The Android operating system is the secret weapon of the Droid, but the Android Market may be the Droid’s Achilles heel. No one can deny Apple’s success with the iPhone and its counterpart, the App Store. Boasting over 100,000 applications, the App Store is one of the biggest successes ever created. Though the Apple App Store has been a source of controversy for Apple, but it is also a huge source of revenue and it is one of the many benefits of being an iPhone (or iPod Touch) user. The Apple App Store has more than 100,000 apps, while the Android Market has about ten percent of that.

Google made substantial improvements to Android Market with the SDK 1.6 (a.k.a. ‘Donut’) release of Android a few months back. Donut added the ability for developers to include screenshots and descriptions for their applications, and changed the Android Market so users can browse by most recent addition or featured apps, the top paid apps, and the top free apps.

The Android invasion has begun and the Android operating system is quickly capturing smart phone market share. It remains to be seen if the Droid, or any other Android-based device, can actually be an iPhone killer, but one thing that will be critical to the success of Android-based smart phones is a robust and diverse collection of apps in Android Market.

The Droid is an excellent smartphone with many (if not all) of the features that a modern user would expect, and if you’re a Verizon customer, there probably isn’t a more action packed device on the network. That’s not to say the device doesn’t have its faults; the camera is said to be unpleasant to use, the application selection feels thin in both quantity and quality (despite the claim of 10,000 options), and the phone has bits of basic, non-intuitive functionality that might chafe on some users after a while. But even still, it’s hard not to recommend the Droid to potential buyers eager to do more with their devices. It’s easily the best Android phone to date, and when you couple the revamped OS, Verizon’s killer network, a real keyboard, and an industrial design straight from a gadget enthusiast’s fever-dream, it makes for a powerful concoction. Ultimately, the Droid won’t usurp the iPhone from the public’s collective mindshare or convince casual users that they must switch to Android.

Dan Brown is one of those authors that can write basically anything and still sell millions of books. After reading The Lost Symbol, I must say I did enjoy reading it. It was an adventurous thrill ride that kept me on the edge of my seat. Nevertheless, The Lost Symbol was, of course, not as great as The Da Vinci Code. In my opinion, although The Lost Symbol wasn’t a bad book, it was still a letdown.

Before I begin reviewing the book and showing how the book was made, here’s a quick overview of the book (No Spoilers!).

The Lost Symbol accelerates through a startling landscape toward an unthinkable finale. As the story opens, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned unexpectedly to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol Building. Within minutes of his arrival, however, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object — artfully encoded with five symbols—is discovered in the Capitol Building. Langdon recognizes the object as an ancient invitation . . . one meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of esoteric wisdom. When Langdon’s beloved mentor, Peter Solomon—a prominent Mason and philanthropist —is brutally kidnapped, Langdon realizes his only hope of saving Peter is to accept this mystical invitation and follow wherever it leads him. Langdon is instantly plunged into a clandestine world of Masonic secrets, hidden history, and never-before-seen locations—all of which seem to be dragging him toward a single, inconceivable truth.

Okay, now some advice to Dan Brown:

Get a new editor. There were some whole passages, even chapters, that served no purpose other than to inflate your book to an unnecessary size. I don’t mind reading big books, but I do mind reading through unnecessary words. Ch. 69, for example, is unnecessary.

Location to Location. We don’t need to know exactly how every character moves from one location to the next, which turn they took, what street they walked across. If it serves the plot, if the geography is important (as it was in Angels and Demons), then fine. Geography was crucial at certain moments in this book, but many times, the passages when you describe how someone moves from one part of a house to another part, what door they opened and closed, all that is boring and tedious.

We know there’s going to be a movie, but…don’t write your novel like a screenplay. Whether you’ve done it consciously or not, your short chapters read as if you had in mind exactly what camera shots you expect out of an inevitable movie adaptation. Leave that to the screenwriter. Write your novel as a novel.

Now that that’s aside, overall, I really enjoyed the book. It was a constant thrill ride with twists and turns that left me guessing each time. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to have a good time. One video I came across when I purchased The Lost Symbol from Amazon was titled “The Making of a Five Million Copy Book” (see below for video). I found this quite interesting. The video took us through the production process of the book from the cover creation all the way to the binding. It was a great look into a side of a business that we rarely get to see.

Today Lexus officially revealed the Lexus LFA on its website. Unlike conventional Lexus automobiles, the Lexus LFA is a complete performance car. The LFA, which sprints from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.7 seconds, is equipped with a 552-horsepower 4.8-liter V10 engine and a six-speed automated sequential gearbox. Lexus describes it as “the pinnacle of the Lexus ‘F’ premium sports car series.” For those of you who aren’t car enthusiasts, that’s really really fast.

I have been keeping track of this Lexus for a while now. Ever since Lexus unwrapped plans to build a super car in 2005, I have been waiting endlessly. Today was finally the day. To me, this is just not any ordinary car. It is what Lexus is all about: Pure luxury with great design mixed with speed. No other car manufacturer can stand up to Lexus cars when it comes to safety. Now, Lexus is trying to tap into the performance field, which is currently dominated by Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche. Lexus is getting down to the nitty-gritty details with its highly anticipated LFA V10 supercar, saying on Wednesday at the official launch of the car at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show that it will limit the production run to just 500 units worldwide. It also said the manufacturer’s suggested price is about $375,000.
The LFA has a vast history. This is the sports car we thought we’d never see. Launched in 2005 with some fanfare, LFA prototypes were soon seen lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany. We bore witness in 2006 as a seemingly production-ready LFA drove the Fuji International Speedway in Japan. It looked as if the launch was imminent, but it wasn’t. Back the Lexus LFA went to the workshops as the chassis changed from aluminum to carbon-fiber in search of lightness and strength. More showcars appeared and billions of yen were spent to make the car faster and more powerful, and then the economic crisis hit. It looked like the Lexus LFA would die, but the personal will of Akio Toyoda, the grandson of Toyota’s founder and the company’s new CEO (and a man who has reportedly raced at the Nürburgring 24 under an assumed name), ensured the car’s survival.

Now, a couple years later the production car is ready to roll.

Design-wise, Lexus did a fantastic job. The side-view looks absolutely breathtaking. But, in my opinion, the back angle is by far one of the greatest design elements that I have seen in any car. The triplet of exhausts mounted in a triangle is a neat touch and helps to highlight the carbon-fiber aero diffuser. The rear wing is integrated into the structure and deploys above 50 mph. The overall effect is undeniably dramatic.

The cabin of the 2011 Lexus LFA is crafted with the finest materials, as if each car has been built by hand in the tradition of a fine coachbuilder. The interior is a lavish ensemble of leather, artificial suede, aluminum and carbon-fiber, and only the multimedia system is obviously sourced from the Lexus parts bin.

Overall, the 2011 Lexus LFA is sharp, agile and feels much smaller on the road than, say, the Ferrari 599 GTB. The brakes are also hugely effective, even if they do squeal a little. Though it is extremely expensive and will be completely impossible to find one, the Lexus LFA is an excellent start to a brand new aspect of Lexus. Check out the video below for great shots and sounds of the car.

I have had a long standing relationship with Apple for the past couple of years.

It all started many years ago when I bought my first iPod (a silver iPod Mini). I still remember the day when I opened the brilliantly designed box and started sporting the now banal white headphones. I thought to myself, “There is no way Apple could make this better.” Well, almost 6 years later, that thought has been completely destroyed with the introduction of the iPod Video with Color (Yeah…remember the days when it was a shock to have your iPod in color), iPod Classic, iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, and of course the now historic iPhone.

Last year, I started my freshman year at Brown University. After months of college applications and decisions, the final step was to determine whether I should get a Mac or a PC. I have been fortunate enough to have had 3 or 4 Windows-enabled laptops in my childhood. All of them broke. After some research, I finally decided to get a Macbook Pro. After 1 and a half years, my computer is still the same as it was the day I bought it. It’s fast, trendy and amazing (words that I cannot say about a 2 year old PC).

Now, I will admit I am an Apple fanboy, and this view is a bit biased. But, no one can deny the sheer talent of Apple. When I was in middle school or even high school, Apple was viewed as the rebel’s computer. Whoever had an Apple was thought to be “strange” or “weird.” Now, the tables has turned. Here in college, whoever doesn’t have a Mac is thought to be abnormal. Each month Apple seems to create new and better products that amaze even Microsoft enthusiasts. I remember reading an article where Bill Gates’ kids were banned from having iPhones in their household. That statement alone shows how Apple has invaded the market, so much so that Bill Gates has to make it a rule to ban iPhones in his house.

To prove my point, Apple dropped a hardware update bomb this Tuesday morning with a brand-new desktop mouse, new iMacs, new low-end MacBooks, and a new Mac mini. All of the above had been rumored for some time, but a new mouse was the first to captivate Apple fans’ attention due to its multitouch makeover. For those of you who have not yet heard about these improvement, I urge you to see this new “Magic Mouse.”

I guess what I’m trying to say is that Apple is one of the best companies around because they know how to tackle their consumer base. They know what their audience wants, and they actually give them exactly that at reasonable prices. Unlike other computer software/hardware makers, Apple (in my opinion) generously runs its business with its audience in mind. For instance, this past August, Apple released Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Unlike previous operating systems from Windows, Snow Leopard’s retail price was only $29.99. All you had to do was pop the Snow Leopard disc in your computer and in about 30-40 minutes, you had a brand new operating system on your computer. No pesky hardware upgrades like the Vista fiasco and no hassle.

If there’s one fact that I’ve learned as an Economics major is to always know the demand of your consumer. Pleasing them means future success. Apple was once a hipster-only computer company, now it’s the company with the must-have products. That’s a pretty significant change. Any entrepreneur can learn from Apple’s success: Please your customers, give them what they want and surprise them. Surprise is the biggest factor that any successful company has.

Not only do they have some of the most technologically advanced products mixed with great innovation and ease of use, Apple has the “wow” factor that so many companies strive to attain. With their constant surprises and diligence to their consumer base, Apple is surely one of the best companies in the world.

It’s that time of the year again. For those of you who don’t know, the GMAT is a standardized assessment, delivered in English, that helps business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. Thousands of undergraduates are looking to find the secret to conquering the GMAT in order to have yet another qualification to gain acceptance into the top business schools in the nation. That’s my current situation anyway. Yesterday, I went to search for some GMAT prep books and found some interesting information that I thought would be appropriate for (aux). Here’s what I found…

 Amazon.com Widgets
According to many GMAT test takers, instead of just buying one book and studying the sections in that, you must buy a plethora of books with different topics so that you can filter the topic and learn it the most. In order to successfully succeed on the GMAT, you should purchase all these books. It may seem expensive now, but just imagine how great it will be once you get into a top business school and start networking yourself and making money!

The iPhone has swept the nation. Everywhere you look, almost every person is sporting their white headphones with their iPhone in their hands. To me, the iPhone is more than just a phone and an iPod with a shiny Apple logo on the back. I’ve had my iPhone 3G for over a year now. I don’t mean to sound like every other iPhone enthusiast, but I truly cannot live without it. One of the reasons it’s now an integral part of my life is its application capabilities. Being an entrepreneur myself, my iPhone is a savior. The “Email and Internet everywhere you go” is a known benefit of the iPhone. However, what some people fail to see is it’s great abilities in the application market. In this article, I will explain the top application that I use on my iPhone to manage my companies.

Credit Card Terminal

Let’s say you own your own apparel store (as I do myself). Imagine how great it would be to have a device in your pocket that could accept credit cards wherever you go. Here’s a real life situation that happened to me. I was on a plane going back to Brown University from my winter break. Living in California, each break I have an 8 hour plane ride back to college. Each time I meet a new person. One flight I met a man who was interested in Brown and how I got it. I discussed my business ventures in high school as well as my current endeavors. Well, he was interested in buying one of my designs from Fujii App(ar)le. I handed him my iPhone with Credit Card Terminal open. He put in his credit card information and instantly his payment was verified and sent to my employees. That to me is one of the great uses to way iPhones.

CC Terminal costs $0.99 for a limited time. The regular price is $49.99 but the application comes with a $50 iTunes Gift Card. To use this app, you will have to fork over $25 per month for an account with the firm. Each transaction will cost 24 cents plus 2.09% of the total. So, obviously before you use this application, make sure its benefits outweigh the costs. Most importantly, it uses 3G and WiFi.

Get CC Terminal on iTunes!

Flight Tracker Pro

Frequent flyers know how frustrating it is to go to the airport just to see your flight delayed for hours or even last-minute gate changes. Many entrepreneurs fly to go to business meetings. Imagine going to the airport and missing your flight and then consequently your meeting with a client because of a last-minute gate change. Flight Tracker Pro will check for your gate numbers and flight cancellations, and search alternative schedules. For each flight, enthusiasts can view the aircraft type, speed, and altitude. It also checks FAA airport delays and closures, airport arrival times, and temperature, and it tracks your flights worldwide.

It costs $9.99 but there are no transaction fees. All you have to do is forward your airline confirmation e-mail to plans@tripit.com.

Get Flight Tracker Pro here!

mbPointer

You, as an entrepreneur or business professional, might have many presentations to make. Regular PowerPoint presentations cost upwards of $10. Why not save some money and buy an iPhone application. For just $2.99, you can transform your iPhone into a pointer and slide changer.

To use mbPointer with your computer, you need to install the free companion receiver application. Then mbPointer connects to your PC or Mac via Wi-Fi and acts as a remote control for your presentations. But this app is much more than just a PowerPoint remote–it also lets your iPhone serve as a regular touchpad for your PC, allowing you to perform mouse movements (including scrolling and middle-button clicking) with your finger on a virtual pad. Fancy, huh?

Get mbPointer now!

Analytics App

As a web manager for three companies as well as other ventures, I need to be able to keep track of all my websites and how well they are doing whenever I can, especially on the go. One of the best ways to sense the popularity of your website as well as judge how much more marketing you need is to get the Analytics App. This app gives you all the features of Google Analytics on your iPhone. Getting started with Analytics App is as easy as entering your Google account credentials. Analytics App offers 47 types of reports in a neatly organized interface, including custom reports for multiple accounts.

Check the Analytics App now!

QuickOffice Mobile Office Suite

One problem…you are on a plane with no access to a computer. Well, it’s a fact. iPhone + Microsoft Office documents do not match. You can read the document but there is no free ability to edit your documents directly on the iPhone. Until now…

QuickOffice provides a comprehensive suite that can view, edit, and exchange Microsoft Word and Excel documents on the go. For just $9.99 (for the next 10,000 customers for a limited time), you can have this great ability wherever you go.
